Just take notes! Obsidian makes it very, very easy to link them later. Then use it! (You can get fancy with multiple templates later, but start simple.) Set up a template that at least includes: aliases (see above) and last modified date (so you’ll know later when something is out of date. Recommendations for this specific use case: Many, many thanks to the community around Obsidian, y’all rock. (Anki and Zotero are two other must-haves for medical school.) I have a to-do list of every spot in every note that I have tagged as #outofdate. I have links to my literature database in Zotero. The plugins have blown my expectations out of the water. Also, when I’m looking at my moxifloxacin page, I have a pane that lists every mention of moxifloxacin or moxi in my vault, and I just have to click on each for Obsidian to replace it with the appropriate link. As I make new notes, I’ve gotten used to typing [[ when I know I want a link, and if I type [[T2DM, Obsidian is smart enough to offer to auto-complete a link to Diabetes mellitus, type 2 with T2DM as the linked text. Obsidian lacks the automatic linking I had in VoodooPad (looks like Saga, mentioned above, has it) but I have 100% not missed it. Diabetes mellitus, type 2 is aliased as T2DM, type 2 diabetes, etc. The brand names are nice, but it’s super important in my use case to have abbreviations. That combination means I can already use it on iOS - I use 1Writer I host my own data (on Dropbox, iCloud, whatever) I chose Obsidian for this year’s migration because: My pharmacy second brain is for life, so I never want to be locked in. That future is here, so that decision paid off. Therefore, I could see a clear path to migrate from VoodooPad to another solution in the future. I chose VoodooPad because it supports Markdown and PDFs, and I hosted my own data on Dropbox. I used VoodooPad during my post-grad, and now have transferred from there to Obsidian. I need my diabetes pathology notes somewhat near my endocrinology notes but also next to my antidiabetic agent notes and near my kidney disease notes. All my notes ended up neatly sandboxed by course, which is not at all useful for my ongoing learning. I was pen (okay, some kind of smartpen with audio recording) and paper for most of pre-clinical, then stylus and iPad the last year. If you’re interested in it, ping me.I graduated pharmacy school in 2014, and so wish I had used a linked note system like Obsidian back then. It seems like one of those things that I just did to see if I could, and not worth troubling the internets with. I also wrote a script page within my scratchpad (called Today) that jumps to the current day instead of itself when you open it. That could be good or bad, depending on your system. It’s not smart, though, and if you don’t have a page for the current day, it’s going to make one. Restart VoodoPad and the shortcut Control-Command-G will jump to the current day. Then just save it as a in your Script Plugins folder (~/Library/Application Support/VoodooPad/Script Plugins). You’ll want to edit the line with os.date() in it to match the format of your date-named pages. I’m sure this is the case for anyone who’s logging or journaling in VoodooPad, and if you’ve ever scrolled for more than a few seconds just to find the page for today, here’s your (über-simple) answer.
Navigating them isn’t difficult, but once you’ve run it for a year or more, you end up with a lot of very similarly named pages (2010-09-xx, etc.).
I won’t go into detail on the inner workings (I’m hoping to post a little more about them on TUAW soon), but the end result is a very well-connected log of what I’ve done, what I’ve found and what I’ve learned each day. I’m using Ian Beck’s VoodooPad Scratchpad scripts, and have been for over a year. It’s really only useful to people who use VoodooPad to keep a journal or log with a page for each date, and all it does is jump to the current day’s page. This script may not be of use to many people, but I’m finding it so handy today that I figured I’d post it in the hopes that someone who needs it finds it.
